Audacity is one of the best-known and veteran desktop applications in the open source landscape, specializing in audio editing and available for free for Windows, Linux, and macOS desktop systems.
Now, 9 months after the last major stable release came out, Audacity 3.0 arrives, another major update, the main novelty of which is the release of the new aup3 file format, which will allow users to save every project they are working on in a single file that brings together all the data of the project itself.
Veteran Audacity is still very much alive despite the years
To understand the progress of the new file format for projects that now arrives, it must be taken into account that aup, the previous format, saved the data of a project in different small files, with the .aup file in charge of coordinating them, a way of working that has frequently caused problems when saving projects.
The team of developers also emphasizes that the new version still allows projects to be loaded in the previous file format, although when saving them again, it will be done in the new file format.
The new aup3 file format is basically an SQLite 3 database, also open source.
They further consider that:
Working with .aup3 projects, editing audio on most machines should be a bit faster than before, because there are fewer files you are working on
Although on the negative side it is found that:
Finishing and closing a project at the end of the job can be considerably slower, as there is more to do when a project is closed. We think the tradeoffs are worth it.
Users using older versions of Audacity will not be able to work with the new project file format.
In addition to the main novelty, this version also has a new backup option for projects, comes the new Label sounds analyzer that allows the labeling of sounds and silences, allows the import and export of macros, and has improved the noise reduction effect, adding to the fix of more than 160 bugs throughout the application and a few more internal adjustments.
Currently, the installers of this version are available for the different desktop systems that can be installed to have the news when it comes to recording and editing audio, in addition to the corresponding source code of the application.
